“And from among His Signs are the night and the day, and the sun and the moon. Prostrate yourselves not to the sun” nor to the moon, but prostrate yourselves to Allaah Who created them, if you (really) worship Him.” (Fussilat 41:37)

This Monday a solar eclipse will occur at 1:30 p.m. The masjid will offer salaat al-khusoof, a sunnah prayer for when eclipses happen. It is two rakaas.

One can perform salaat al-khusoof by themselves, but it is better in congregation. It is also recommended to pray for the entire duration of the eclipse with long surahs, but because people have work and school, our masjid will shorten it. Even though the imam will lead, these are the instructions:

  1. Recite Qur’an starting from Al-Fatiha, then a longer surah
  2. Go into rukoo and prolong the rukoo with duas
  3. Stand up and recite Qur’an again, starting from Al-Fatiha and then a longer surah
  4. Go into rukoo again and prolong the rukoo with duas but not as long as the first rukoo
  5. Stand up and then go into sujood (prostration) and prolong the sujood with duas
  6. Sit up straight
  7. Go into sujood again and prolong it (but not as long as the first sujood)
  8. Repeat once more for the second rakaat
